David Baker

Professor, biochemistry, University of Washington; director, Institute for Protein Design

David Baker has long been at the forefront of AI-driven protein folding and now protein design, and his lab continues to make huge leaps forward while pushing for a culture of transparency in its competition with AI research behemoth Google DeepMind. In 2023, for example, his lab scooped DeepMind’s AlphaFold by several weeks with an update to its own model that predicts protein configurations around small molecules. No matter which deep learning techniques reign supreme, if Baker’s models manage to stay open source, they’ll have a major impact on biological discovery.
